Webinar 2: Mapping stakeholder views on CCUS technologies in Southern and Eastern Europe

This online seminar presented stakeholder views on carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) and carbon capture and storage (CCS) applications in Southern and Eastern Europe. It was based on the report on Stakeholders’ views on CCUS developments in the studied regions compiled in WP3 of the STRATEGY CCUS project.
The aim of STRATEGY CCUS is to enable the short to mid-term development of carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) through strategic planning of industrial CCUS clusters in Southern and Eastern Europe, within the overarching context of emissions reduction for climate change mitigation.
To assess stakeholders’ views, we conducted 102 semi-structured interviews in CCUS target regions in France, Spain, Portugal, Croatia, Romania, Greece and Poland as well as at European level. Participants of this online seminar heard how the interviewees assess the (future) role of CCUS in their region - and respectively at European level - as well as the drivers and barriers for the implementation of CCUS applications. We presented our interview methodology and results and included an extended Q&A session.

The seminar was chaired by Fernanda M. L Veloso of the French Geological Survey, BRGM. Fernanda is a geologist specialised in geological and reservoir modelling for the geological storage of CO2. Before she joined BRGM and completed her PhD, she spent almost five years at Total, an international oil and gas company, where she worked as a wellsite geologist and as a researcher studying the behavior of seal rocks in high temperature and high pressure conditions. Fernanda is project coordinator for STRATEGY CCUS.

Sabine Preuss is a trained psychologist and social researcher at Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI within the Competence Center "Energy Technologies and Energy Systems". She holds a PhD in social, environmental and economic psychology. As senior scientist, her research focuses on the human factors for the energy transition, such as behavioral changes, attitudes and acceptance as well as important stakeholders and actors for the transformation of the energy system.
Christian Oltra is a social researcher at the Centre for Socio-Technical Research of CIEMAT's Department of the Environment and has a PhD in Sociology. His lines of research include the study of the social perception of environmental and technological risk and the acceptance of technologies, infrastructures and energy applications. His research focuses primarily on understanding the psycho-social and contextual determinants of social reactions to environmental risks and technological and energy developments.
Julius Wesche is a researcher in the Competence Center Energy Policy and Energy Markets at Fraunhofer ISI. He is also a PhD student at Utrecht University and is interested in contributing to a better understanding of the German low-carbon heat transition and of strongly context dependent innovation systems. Julius is a member of the steering group of the Sustainability Transitions Research Network (STRN) and co-hosts the enPower podcast (enpower-podcast.de).
